"Modern Times" diorama build, gear nation

Here's a whole whack of finished gears, I've base coated everything for the build so far in a dark brown/grey which will give me some flexibility when getting different tones to create a solid sense of depth when I start to assemble the pieces.
It's going to be a bit of a challenge figuring out tones, I want the "sets" to be flexible to shoot in both colour and black & white when I do the staging, but I'm enjoying this so I'm game for the challenge.
Okay, time to watch the Americans and make some more bits und pieces.

"Modern Times" Diorama Build, Groovy Gears

Here are some views of the groovy gears and wheels that I'm putting together today for the "Modern Times" inspired build. If you look closely and break it down its just a bunch of circles on tiny dowels and some wooden spools, not hard at all to day. I've also included a rear view so you can see how they are attached.
I've built about six of them today, always remember to build a bunch at the same time so its not as intimidating to do.
This build is going to take some time but I know the results will far outweigh the time it took to get there.
cheers,

A.Shay Hahn, Life Boat Build WIP

Here's as far as I got today on the Life Boat build, mostly I'm just dinking around with placement of figures and the boat itself, still lots to go until I'm happy with it and I'll have to shoot a few hundred digital shots until I get what I'm looking for. I'll also have to hook up some kind of lighting rig, maybe two MR's on a fader box ( please don't send me technical questions, I'll probably get a buddy to build it for me, I have no clue about this stuff) to control the light, this was shot with just the over heads in the studio so it reads pretty "hot".
The background is just a block in and will gain detail over time.
If you're trying to identify figures in the build just keep in mind my favourite trick for making new "characters" which is this, I pop the heads off of figures and switch them.
Haven't heard back from the agent I contacted yet and I'll continue working on the second draft of Book Two (which is probably 70,000 words - the first book which was mostly the set up for the next three books is about 54,000 words) through to the end of February.
time for a cold glass of juice.

Alfred Hitchcock's "Lifeboat" Build

I have had an obsession with "Lifeboat" for a couple of years, it began with the Annie Leibowitz photo from the Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue that recreated scenes from Hitchcock films. I had also been painting many pictures of women sleeping in rowboats and angels with wooden wings rowing them (see my other blog "the mad craft shoppe" at sidebar) there's also a great fan created Tragically Hip video that uses footage from the film - darnit I can't remember the song - I'll find it later and post it, so as you can see the seeds of obsession had started getting some pretty firm roots in my head and once that happens - I'm on a mission.
(My current mission is to find a used copy of "The Gunstringer" for Kinect, so let me know if you see one in Toronto)
It's easy to just buy dvd's to complete your collection on ebay or buy at full price at a retailer, but I like the hunt and I would scour used stores for very specific films that I wanted, The Blood of Heroes, Ian McEllan's Richard III and of couse, Lifeboat. After a couple years of fruitless searching I finally found a copy - under the Christmas Tree, many thanks to my lovely wife.
I decided to build my own lifeboat and worked on it as we watched the film.
It's day two of the build and I'm at the paint stage, have to throw a raw umber on it to tie it together but it's coming along nicely, my only regret is that it should be deeper, here's a tip for you builders out there - it's easier to make your figures sit if they can actually sit with a full bended knee.
Luckily I have a chaotic scene planned for this diorama so if all the folks aren't seated that's fine.
check back in later today to see how it's coming.

Modern Times Inspired Diorama WIP

Continuing with our "moving parts" resolution of 2013 I decided to build a diorama of a factory and what better inspiration than Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times" it's early days for this build yet but I wanted to get a couple of pics up here for you to see.
The building kits of the Space Needle (see prior posts below) have really come in handy for making the giant gears. The build and painting is going to take a couple of weeks but I'm having a great time with it.
In other news its very difficult to explain to a dog (a dog who hates getting wet) that when it is raining in the back yard it is also raining everywhere else.

Big News and Verbal Nonsense edition

Hey folks back again for the second post of the day, I am very happy to announce that I have finished the fourth and final draft of the first book of the Any How Town series. I have contacted one agent with a query letter and hope to hear back from them soon.
I guess for the rest of the week I'll be,working on the second draft of Book Two which is in great shape and I suppose its time to get it seriously solid and beefed up, just in case any one asks to read it next month..
If the agent that I contacted happens to come to this blog to see what I've been building and drawing let me first say hello and assure you that you'll love what you see here. I love AHT I adore the characters and the crazy troubles that they stumble upon.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was on TV yesterday and it really got me back into finishing the first book, the Indiana Jones films have the sense of fun and action that I think best describes these books, also the Goonies film, it's been too long since there's been a movie like the Goonies and of course Stand By Me, but Stand By Me as filtered through Steam Punk tinted glasses. Perhaps it's strange to cite films instead of books when discussing AHT but those are the closest kin that I can think of, it's adventure, adrenaline and discovery.

watch your step, it's grey and mushy out there

Popsicle Stick Elevators and Sliding Platforms

Alright let me tell you first that these are easy too build, it just takes a little planning. You will be using a drill for this project, (if you have a drill press ignore this) and you have to make sure that you drill straight through the wood. You may think this sounds easy, it is not, so take your time. The dowels are just the long dowels available at most Dollar stores and the rest of the pieces are from various kits (available at Dollarama, Dollar Tree, wherever) you just pick what you like to make your platforms etc. look cool.
Also it will would help to have a bit of sand paper around to run over the dowels so the platform travels smoothly.
holler at me if you have any questions,

machines and moving parts

Here's a page out of my sketchbook, one of my resolutions in regards to the builds I've been doing is that in 2013 every truck, machine, building, whatever I build has to have a moving part so here are some breakdowns and plans for factory machines that pivot, extend and turn. I've got five on the go and hope to get a few pics up for you to see next week.

Mandarin Orange Crate Craft #3

Heres the third and probably final mandarin orange crate walker (with Scooter buddy!). I decided to change up the single driver concept and made two seats for drivers and one for a front gunner, something like a battleship, if the tower was exposed.
If I was completely nuts I would've made the tower on a stick so it would turn, but also I was a little too far into the build to go back when the idea hit me, if someone wants to commission one Id be happy to add that function.

Game Changing Wooden Puzzles

I'd gone out today to the Dollar Tree to get a couple more of the puzzle globes (see posts below) I was a bit disappointed to see that they'd sold out, I headed over to the Dollarama and found these amazing wooden puzzles of famous landmarks, only $3.00 each.
They are going to take the models that I've been building to a whole new level, really excited to have them. Just look at some of those pieces!
I'm almost finished the THIRD mandarin orange crate walker and then I have to get back to the final last four chapters of Book One in the Any How Town series, it's great to be this close to finishing.

Mandarin Orange Crate Craft II

Here's the second mandarin orange crate walker. The last piece had a great clunky military transport look to it but I thought I could improve on the legs. With this model I extended the legs on wooden dowels - maybe this walker can telescope it's legs up to give it a higher vantage point. I also made the side panel the cargo door and added window openings to the back and other side.
I originally conceived of this vehicle as a bounty hunter/poaching vehicle so I may stage this again with some views of the interior, just waiting for some things to arrive in the mail that I'm going to use.
Next week is a big typing week so this week has been a great creative binge before doing a bunch of "office" work on the book series. The first arc of the books is four stories and I've started plotting the fifth and sixth books which make up a two book series.
Batten down the hatches Newfoundland !

UPDATE- Didn't realize this pic was so dark, will have to reshoot.

Comic Characters, Cover #2

Here's the second cover in the series. I really boned the lettering on this one, sometimes I ink just a little too quickly, have to get used to the slower pace of doing fine lines and preplanning my letters.  I You can see in the 3rd and 4rth photo that I had to lighten the background considerably to make the image pop, it was so uniform before that it looked flat and boring. I also have to go back in and fix the crotch on the bad guy in back on the left, it's driving me crazy. I'm far from happy with this but its about improving step by step and it never bothers me to post my mistakes.
Who are these people exactly?
When the books are published, you'll find out!

Comic Book Heroes of Any How Town

Here's one of the covers that I've been working on for the Any How Town book series. Comics play a big part in the plot of the books (I've discussed this before in other posts) and I wanted to get some done for you to see. It's also part of my resolution to complete and post two AHT based drawings a week. I need to get my skills up (I've also talked at length this, feel free to read some other posts) so if I can do that and improve the online archive of AHT material that's great. I'm sure when an agent or publisher finally stumbles across this blog I think they'll be impressed.

Anyways, yes there are problems with the lettering and inking in the image, but those things will improve with each cover, but I'll also tell you right now that this is not the case, the lettering in the second cover is terrible.
have a great day,
A.Shay Hahn

Comics and Characters

Hey there, its 2013 and it's going to be a big year in Any How Town. I'm going to try and post at least two drawings here a week and also lots of model builds. This fella above is "lil' Golden Guy" the subject of one of the many comic books published in Any How Town. I wanted to get the design down and spent some time yesterday getting it right, next up some comic book covers featuring L.G.G and other heroes.
gotta go, lots to do.
