Inspiration G.I Joe Defiant Space Vehicle Launch Complex

I think this may be the next build that I tackle, it would be a huge challenge to produce my own version of this crazy playset, it will roll, have hinged sides, detachable vehicles, the whole works. I guess I'll start gathering materials and start it in May.
Here's the Wikipedia entry if you need the whole spiel on what this playset could do

While you're waiting please head on over to my other blog, "the mad craft shoppe" to see new paintings that will be for sale at the Press Club (850 Dundas West, Toronto) or go to my blog "the alphabet shoppe" to see the kids letters that I paint.

Dollar Store Scores

One of my favourite independents is the dollar store right at Bathurst Station, they've always got something that no one else has, its where I purchased the awesome mini jengas that I used in some of the builds - wish I'd kept one for myself. Anyways here are some new scores. These chains are going to be great, the links are really small, not quite to scale, but close enough to pass, I just have to knock the shine off them with some paint.
In the bridal section of the store I stocked up on more of these plastic pigeons, they make great background and can be lightly painted so they pass.
The final purchase was two packs of these really skinny dowels by Krafty Kids, I've never seen them so skinny, just look at that, I'm sure they'll be great for cables and wire conduits or mini details.
all in all a good day,
A.Shay Hahn
UPDATE : The store is called "Pay Less For Everything" at least that's what the sign says

The Boiler Room Gang, Diorama

The painted boiler looks pretty good, I'm going to have to study quite a few more references to get the pipe placement to look like it fits but that's for another day.
The first picture is of the Boiler Room gang and their mascot who are in charge of maintaining the massive beastie.
Today was a pretty crap day all around, looking forward to hitting the AGO tomorrow to see some model work by - oh crap I forgot his name and heading over to Bau-Xi to see what's hanging there.
Don't forget to go to the Press Club to see my work and the work of the lovely Jack Breakfast, in fact tomorrow night he'll be playing some songs along with Jimmy Byron, see the mad craft shoppe blog for info.
cheers,

Diorama Boiler Room, now mit Boiler!

Had a hard time figuring out the scale of the boiler for the boiler room, I wanted it to dominate the space but also not cover too much of the elevator, a mistake in placement I guess. I have taken two cut pieces of 1x3 and glued them to the bottom so it now sits flush in the "cradle". I'll paint it up tomorrow and see if it works and how I can tie the pipes into the rest of the piece. Once this is finished I'll be taking a bit of a break and will return to the 3rd edit of Book Two in the Any How Town book series or maybe jump over and write another good chunk of Book Three which has been plotted but I've only written the first 30-40 pages.
rest well Stompin' Tom

Popsicle Stick Boiler Room, Day Two (ish)

Alright, we've got just about everything in place for the boiler room and have started laying in some different colours, I just wanted to get this up and I'll post some better detail shots tomorrow, when I'll be developing certain key areas and adding signs and cables and all kinds of what not to really give this one some life.
The foreground girder is not attached and will only be used for shots where it will throw cool shadows, the elevator needs more detailing and a railing and I still want to add something else to give the piece a more claustrophobic feeling. It feels a little too open for me, it needs to be more Freddy Krueger and less Fred Penner.

Popsicle Stick Boiler Room

Here's the first day of the seventh (is it seven?) build a very cool boiler room. To do something different with this build I added the working elevator on the back wall and also this piece uses pieces of 1/8th thick plastic (oh what the heck is the kind of plastic called, I can't remember) to make windows and give some options for lighting. The plastic itself has been sprayed with a speckled umber wash so it diffuses whatever is behind it.
I still have a lot of holes to fill in this piece, lots more work to do before I get to base coating the piece, I'll be adding a railing around the second floor and all kinds of pipes and doo dads to really give the piece depth.

Abandoned Dollhouse Project, Day Two

Here's Day Two of the build, as you can see I put in the checkerboard floor, which is made of pieces of cardboard glued down, base coated black and then the raised sections were highlighted in white/grey tones.
Most of the "bricks" which are broken up popsicle sticks were placed in the gaps and then base coated with a dirty red/brown. I also put in the two staircases (man I hate stair cases) which was down by tilting the model on it's back or side and gluing the treads down.
We sure got a lot accomplished today, even started putting in the first room on the Third floor (see last photo).
not a bad day at all, except for the very real leak we've just discovered in our actual roof
